Bluefield, Virginia’s Original
Name Explained
Pin Hook, the first name given to what is now the town of Bluefield,
Virginia, was explained on a local radio talk show Friday July 17, 2009.
Terry Mullins, co-author of “Bluefield, Virginia,” explained how
the town got its first name of Pin Hook.
'Pinhooking' is the
practice of buying livestock outside the regular channels with the specific
intention of re-selling it for a profit. Apaprently this activity took
place in the area the town now occupies.
To this day there
is a sign at the Tazewell County Cattle Auction that reads “No Pinhooking
Allowed.”
The book is now available
at Hearthside Books in Bluefield, Virginia. Mullins, and Tazewell County
historian Louise Leslie, joined forces to write this pictorial history of
Virginia’s Tallest town.

Bluefield Elks
Swim Party an Annual Event
For the last five years the Bluefield
Elks Club and the Bluefield Union Mission have joined forces to provide
an all day swim party for area kids.
The Elks provide the pool for all types
of water recreation, a hearty lunch cooked on the grill, games, prizes
and a whole lot more.
This year, the mission identified 15
kids who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to participate in the
summer fun.
Each year kids from the region are treated
to a memorable experience of wholesome fun, nutritious food, and fellowship.
This year’s event took place on July
11th.
“Friendly Chapel”
Service Offers Spiritual Help
For seventy eight uninterrupted years
the Bluefield Union Mission’s chapel services have provided a steady
source of spiritual guidance to area and transient people.
Every Friday at 2:00 pm the doors of
“Friendly Chapel” open for prayer requests and a short devotion.
The mission schedules its chapel services
on Friday because it encourages people to join a local house of worship
on an ongoing basis. The mission is an arm of all the local
churches.
The word “Union” in the mission’s name
refers to the area houses of worship that came together in “union” in 1931
to form the organization.
