Historic Meeting Held
at Mission
For the first time in our region's history there will be
one ministerial association serving the two Bluefields. On
Wednesday, February 2nd, members of the Bluefield Virginia and
Bluefield West Virginia Ministerial Associations met for lunch
in the mission's dining room to discuss the formation of a
Greater Bluefield Ministerial Association.
The meeting ended with unanimous agreement that such an
association should be formed. A subsequent meeting ratified
the decision with by-laws to be drafted at the June meeting.
"While the majority of pastoring or shepherding takes
place with the local house of worship there are sheep in the
community that need the services that the ministerial
association can uniquely provide," said Mission Director,
Craig Hammond "We are pleased to facilitate this historic
meeting," Hammond said.

BLUEFIELD UNION MISSION/ SPRING TOUR
OF ITALY ... raised close to $5,500 in three hours to benefit the Mission’s
Assistance Program.
Every spring for the last five years
the Villa Italian has literally turned over the keys to the Bluefield Union
Mission on the first Sunday in May.
On May 1st Allen
Hatfield, mission board member and owner of the Villa Italian, served approximately
300 Italian Samplers to friends of the mission. The Sunday afternoon diners
paid $15.00 and in turn received spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, fettuccini
alfreda, garlic bread, salad, desert, coffee, and tea.
Sixteen members
of the mission board and auxiliary served as waiters, bused tables, washed
dishes, and cleaned the restaurant from top to bottom.
"Allen Hatfield
and his staff at the Villa Italian restaurant are true community advocates.
In fact, they give back to the community all year long - and it shows," said
mission board chairman Lonnie Quesenberry.
Mission Director,
Craig Hammond said the money from the fund raiser will be used to purchase
safe, healthy, nutritious, and locally grown food this summer. Special
thanks to all of you who continue to support the work of the Bluefield Union
Mission.

HOMELESS....How
do people get in such
a terrible fix?
Each one has a story. One
was transferred by his
company to a new community.
After working there a few
months, the
company was sold and he was laid
off. He and his wife
and two children needed
help until he was working again.
Many homeless people are poorly
educated, but not all. Some
are even college graduates whose
physical health has deteriorated
leaving them unemployed
and broke. Many young mothers have
been abandoned by their husbands
or lovers leaving them to eke
out an existence for their brood. Some
are addicted to drugs or alcohol.
In short, all, in one way or another,
are trapped by overwhelming
problems and unable to extract
themselves from their dilemma
without assistance.
While the problem
of the homeless
seems insolvable, we
Christians have no choice
but to confront the difficulties
and do what we can
to help.
The words of
Jesus resonate among
us:
'I
was hungry and you
gave me food, I was thirsty
and you gave me drink,
I was a stranger and
you welcomed me, I was
naked and you clothed
me, I was sick and you visited me,
I was in prison and you came to me'
(Matthew 25:35-36).
Many in our
area are
having to do more
with less. Your continued
support helps
us to help them!
